In August 2015 MTX were awarded the contract to design and build a new modular operating theatre at Barlborough Treatment Centre on behalf of Care UK.

The Requirements

The aim of this project was to provide Care UK with an additional operating theatre facility due to the increased demand on the existing theatres. The management team also required additional space to suit their requirements.

The Solution

The bespoke, two storey modular solution comprised of an operating theatre facility with ultra clean canopy at ground floor, directly linked to the existing theatre with office accommodation at first floor, forming an extension to the existing management offices. The external façade is made up of Kingspan cladding and aluminium powder coated windows, designed to suit the existing building. The ground floor was installed as ‘floorless modules’ lifted directly onto a pre-prepared concrete slab. This method allows us to offer a superior interior ceiling height and achieves the floor response factors required for a facility of this nature. The operating theatre is constructed using pre-finished metal clad walls which offer a clinical finish and benefits to the programme as the need for wet trades is reduced. Internally the new theatre area is equipped with automatic opening, pre clad door to improve access for staff, whilst helping to prevent the spread of bacteria.

A touch screen Surgeons panel has been installed in the operating theatre, allowing the user to control all of the theatre equipment (operating lights, ventilation, AGSS) at one control point. The air handling plant is located on the roof, accessible via an external steel staircase. The building is finished with an aluminium louvre so the plant is not visible from the adjacent roads and domestic properties.

Main Considerations

Achieving the programme completion date was critical as operations had been scheduled in. The project was completed within close proximity to the existing live facility, which included theatres. Through constant communication with the theatre staff and careful planning, disruption was kept to a minimum and all tasks affecting the existing theatres were carried out ‘out of hours’.

The project was completed on time and within budget.
