Stanmore College – New Modular Classroom Block

In November 2010 Modular Building Specialists MTX completed the installation of a £500,000 two storey modular building to house a new-classroom block for Stanmore College in Middlesex.

Working with Project Managers SPM Ltd, MTX were first required to demolish a disused caretakers home to make room for the new building and then contracted to design and build a new 'green' classroom block using the latest sustainable and environmentally friendly building technology in order to lessen the new buildings impact on the environment and the densely built up surrounding urban areas.

By using fast track modular construction methods, MTX were able to significantly reduce the environmental impact of the building and the project by using more ozone friendly building materials, reducing waste and minimising vehicle movement and noise pollution during the project. The newly installed building also features an increasingly popular 'Green Roof', a concept that is being recognised as an important part of helping our cities adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change. Other features include an underground water attenuation system which helps to manage rainfall and problems with flooding in the surrounding areas at peak periods.

The new classroom facility, built to provide the college with additional teaching capacity to cater for an increase in courses, accommodates a new Health & Beauty Training Centre. The building, which is totally DDA compliant, comprises 4 large classrooms, a large first floor lobby, toilets, lift and plant room. The new building has been finished to a very high standard internally and features a visually pleasing cedar cladding to the exterior.

Designed and built in just 3 months the users of the new classroom block are very pleased with both the internal and external finish of their new building and can't believe it has been built so quickly using modular construction methods.
