MTX were awarded the contract to provide scientific company Hall Analytical with a state-of-the-art laboratory in a pre-existing building.

The Requirements

Hall Analytical forms part of Crawford Scientific, the UK’s premier supplier of chromatography products. They offer bespoke, analytical services including mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and spectroscopy. Due to their continued growth, Hall Analytical had a requirement to expand their current services to a new site, located in Wythenshawe, Manchester.

Provision of further accommodation and laboratory facilities allows the end users to carry out more sample analysis, to meet demand of their growing business and client base.

The Solution

To assist with the design phase, MTX appointed architectural partners HPA and consulting engineers DSSR and together produced a bespoke, single storey, modern solution.

Commencing on site in September 2019, MTX provided the complete fitout of 8 laboratories, including a LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry) lab, GC-MS (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry) labs, an inorganics lab, wet labs, vape testing labs and ancillary areas.

Collectively these laboratories enable the end users to test compositions of solids or liquids and identify compounds of samples, amongst other examination activities.

Construction works were completed to the highest standard, utilising ultra clean materials and finishes. This was to ensure full compliance was achieved, in relation to the testing of products and materials for the pharmaceutical industry.

Main Considerations

Air quality was the main client request, due to the nature of works that take place inside the laboratories. When the end users test and check the chemical samples, they need to ensure that they can clearly and accurately identify what elements are present in the specimen. Poor air quality would interfere with this process and potentially hamper the results.

MTX completed the project in just 25 weeks, from initial site set up to the facility becoming completely operational.
