New MTX twin modular operating theatre suite delivered in just 13 weeks at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton.
In October 2011 MTX were awarded the contract to design, install and commission a permanent twin modular operating theatre suite at New Cross Hospital for The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust. The new twin operating theatre suite, built to provide additional operating theatre capacity to cope with increased workload, brings the hospitals theatres to a total of ten and has been impressively finished internally and externally with larger than normal features throughout to accommodate a new state of the art £1million Da Vinci Robot that will be piloted in the new theatres.
Groundworks for the new theatre project commenced on site at New Cross Hospital in January 2011 at which time the pre-fabricated building modules started in production through the quality controlled manufacturing process. In order to achieve the required response factors for the new theatres, situated at first floor level, the building modules were custom built without floors so that they could be dropped into position onto an in situ first floor steel platform with concrete slab.
Anaesthetic and Operating Theatre
Along with the twin operating theatre suite, the design and build contract included the installation of a 5 bed recovery suite, 3 link way corridors to connect to the main hospital building and a dedicated, stand alone plant room installed at ground floor level underneath the theatre platform.
Internally the new theatres have been finished and specified to a very high standard and using the latest in theatre design and high care technology. Membrane touch screen surgeons panels have been installed in the theatres which include x-ray and laser socket switches linked directly to all theatre door sets providing a magnetic locking device to create safe and contained theatres during specialist procedures. Calming pastel blues have been used for the floors and the automatic sliding doors, which have been installed to provide easy access for theatre staff. The walls and floors have been finished with a high performance Trovex Diamond PVC welded cladding system to deliver reduced maintenance and provide an anti bacterial hygienic surface for increased cleanliness.
High Quality Finish
Externally the new modular building has been finished with a modern Kingspan micro ribbed panel system to stay in keeping with the architecture of the existing hospital building and provide a clean and easily maintainable modern finish.
The new theatres, completed in April 2011 were completed under budget and on schedule in just 13 weeks and the feedback from end users has been extremely encouraging.
