In November 2009 MTX completed the design, supply and installation of a 466m² modular extension to house a new Children’s Outpatient Unit for The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.

The requirement

Working for ProCure 21 Principal Supply Chain Partner Interserve, MTX were awarded the contract in August 2009 with a required completion date of just 10 weeks later.

The new single storey modular facility was required to allow the Trust to decant the existing Children’s Outpatient Unit into the new extension to free up space for 20 additional winter beds.

Fast track construction

Within a day of being awarded the contract, MTX immediately commenced work to prepare the site and carry out initial groundworks and drainage requirements.

During this preliminary works stage the 24 prefabricated building modules were manufactured at MTX’s controlled manufacturing facility in Hull and after just 4 weeks on site the modules, which were pre-fitted to the clients specification, were transported and carefully craned into position over 2 days using one of the UK’s largest cranes.

Accommodation

The new facility, which incorporates nine consulting rooms, offices, treatment room and reception area, is linked to the central hospital corridor via a new opening formed during the build.

In order to ensure the building was ‘child friendly’, soft warm colours were introduced to the floors and walls and the use of decorative cartoon artwork around the facility effectively softens the overall appearance.

The new facility boasts a state of the art energy efficient VRV comfort cooling / heating system to all staff and public areas which provides close control of temperature for the entire suite during the winter and summer months. MTX also installed a fresh air ventilation system to areas that, due to fire regulatory restrictions, prevented the use of ‘openable’ windows. This delivers fresh air to create a more natural and comfortable atmosphere for occupants and visitors.

Project completion

The project has been a resounding success, with handover completed on time and within budget, allowing the transfer of the children’s outpatient unit as scheduled. Since completion MTX has also been awarded further work to install a brick skin around the perimeter of the building, enhancing its overall look and to stay inkeeping with the other hospital buildings on the site. This extra work has been achieved by carefully planning the installation of additional footings, which has allowed the brickwork to be safely completed whilst staff & patients continue to use the facility.
