Working under Galliford Try Building Southern, MTX were appointed to design and construct a modular building to be used as Trust Headquarters at Royal Sussex and County Hospital.
The Requirements
Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust had a requirement for a completely new facility to relocate the existing Administration Departments, creating a Clinical Administration Building. However after further personnel location planning, the Trust made the decision to use the facility as a new Trust Headquarters.
The Solution
Working in conjunction with architectural partners IBI Group and structural Engineers Alan Wood & Partners, MTX designed a fit for purpose 3 storey modular standalone building with a modern and aesthetically pleasing exterior. The facility also includes a ‘green roof’. This grass feature boasts a wealth of environmental benefits, including improved storm water management, increased longevity of roofing membrane and enhanced energy conservation.
Internally, the new facility houses staff offices, toilets, meeting areas and staff break rooms. The basement incorporates a seminar room, bike storage area and plantroom. A separate security office was also constructed, connecting to the main building via link way.
Main Considerations
The new modular building was constructed on the main hospital site in extremely close proximity to the A&E Department. Due to the 24 hour nature of A&E, MTX had to ensure that a careful and considerate logistics plan was produced to ensure that the roads were never blocked and allowed for the continuous flow of ambulances serving the existing A&E.
In addition to the adjacent A&E Department, the site compound was also right opposite public dwellings and therefore noise levels and site disruptions had to be kept to a minimum in order to comply with local planning guidelines surrounding noise and nuisances. In order to overcome this matter, the residents in the neighbouring area were all appropriately informed of the project before works took place and the lifting and installation phase was completed in daytime hours.
