In August 2012 MTX were awarded the contract to design and install a new single storey modular building extension to the existing Accident and Emergency Department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital for Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.
The Requirements
The Trust submitted plans to expand the A&E Department at Stoke Mandeville in order to ‘focus its medical A&E expertise in a single site to provide a more specialist, better resourced and higher quality service overall’. Once the application was approved the Trust required a fast track building solution and, with a proven track record for delivering similar schemes within record time using the latest off-site construction methods, MTX were awarded the contract in August to design and build a modular extension to accommodate a CDU (Critical Decision Unit) for 20 patients, a new resuscitation unit and one dedicated trauma bay.
The Solution
Built and installed over a rapid 12-week programme, MTX developed a single storey 660m2 modular building extension consisting of 22 modules plus an Ambulance Canopy. The building was split 60:40 into two separate areas; the larger area included a 20 bed CDU facility, reception/nurse bay, dirty utility, storage room and WC/showers. The other area included 5 resuscitation bays comprising of an examination lamp, surgeons and anaesthetist pendants, IPS electrical outlets and fitted furniture.
Main Considerations
The new modular building extension was installed in a location adjacent to the existing 24hour A&E department and ambulance drop-off area, so sensitivity and carful planning was essential to ensure minimal disruption throughout the entire duration of the project. As such, delivery of the pre-fabricated building modules over a 2-day programme had to be coordinated with ‘military precision’. The Trust also requested an accelerated handover of the Resus area, which MTX was able to deliver one week ahead of schedule. The remainder of the accommodation was handed over to the Trust on 11th March 2013 and feedback has been extremely positive.
