New modular operating theatre suite at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
In September 2011 MTX were awarded the contract to construct a new modular operating theatre to form an extension of the existing facility at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. Due to the existing theatre block being located at first floor level the new modular unit was to be constructed on a bespoke steel gantry with elevated concrete base on which the theatre and roof top plant space would sit.
Ground conditions within the area were heavily populated with existing services therefore a piled foundation solution was devised, with drains, pipes, ducts and cables being bridged by re-enforced concrete pile caps to provide suitable bases for the steel transfer structure.
Once the building was in position the fit out works were completed within eight weeks, which was a notable feat especially considering two of these weeks were over the Christmas period when labour forces are limited and supplies are difficult to source.
The finished suite comprised of an operating theatre, anaesthetic room, prep, dirty utility, store and exit bay with mechanical plant and electrical equipment located within the rooftop plantroom accessed via an external staircase.
Upon completion of the project in January 2012, the client was extremely pleased that the theatre was constructed with minimal disruption to existing services and was completed two weeks quicker than originally programmed.
