As we look back on another busy year delivering some fantastic schemes to the NHS, we wanted to take the opportunity to thank our clients for the continued support and to share some of our key project highlights.
Cambridge Movement Hub at Addenbrooke’s leads surgical strategy
Three new orthopaedic operating theatres built by MTX at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge are leading a national scheme to deliver more than 50 new surgical hubs across England.
The Cambridge Movement Surgical Hub is designed to increase orthopaedic capacity at Addenbrooke’s Hospital by 20%, to around 2,700 planned procedures a year. It links to two adjacent wards ungraded by MTX to provide 40 dedicated surgical beds for orthopaedic surgery patients.
MTX employed MMC principles to deliver faster, greener, safer and more cost effective completion using 64 precisely engineered steel modules manufactured off-site to create the 2500m²+ building.
Top theatres at Royal Bolton Hospital
Four state-of-the-art operating theatres were delivered at the Royal Bolton Hospital using MMC principles. MTX was initially awarded the contract to deliver two theatres but the Trust then gained funding for a total of four theatres and refurbishing existing facilities to create a bespoke day-case paediatrics theatre hub.
The two-theatre single storey development was well advanced before MTX began construction of the first floor extension. A complex and innovative programme maintained the integrity of the ground floor, along with careful management introducing more than 50 additional structural steel modules on top of almost 140 making up the ground floor.
Derriford Royal Eye Infirmary recognised in awards
The new Royal Eye Infirmary in Derriford built by MTX for University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust was highly commended in the Building Better Healthcare Awards category for Best Modular/Mobile Healthcare Facility.
The three-storey REI is located off the main Derriford Hospital site. It brings together outpatient and surgical eye treatments previously provided within the main hospital and includes three operating theatres, additional treatment rooms and an expanded area for young patients.
Development of the new Royal Eye Infirmary at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth was made possible through the innovative FLEX managed services project package developed by MTX.
Innovative wraparound design for Clatterbridge Theatres Phase 2
The second phase of a state of the art surgical hub at Clatterbridge Hospital on the Wirral completes a total of four new operating theatres able to treat up to 6000 elective surgery patients annually.
The first phase of the Cheshire & Merseyside Surgical Centre at Clatterbridge Hospital opened at the end of 2022. In September 2022 new funding was announced enabling two further theatres within Phase 2 of the project. MTX worked on the two projects simultaneously with Phase 2 designed as a two-storey extension to ‘wrap around’ the first phase to achieve a coherent single building.
